1. Check Pockets and Prep Your Rainwear

Before washing, always check the pockets of your jackets and pants. A forgotten marker or snack could cause a laundry disaster! Ensure zippered pockets are open and Velcro flaps are securely closed to prevent snagging. For any loose dirt, use a soft brush to gently remove it before washing.

2. Spot Clean Small Stains

For minor stains, spot clean with a mild detergent that is free of perfumes and bleach. Hypoallergenic, eco-friendly, or baby-safe detergents work best. Simply dab the stain with soapy water and a soft cloth, then rinse.

3. Use a Specialized Detergent

To maintain the waterproof properties of your rainwear, wash it with a detergent specifically designed for waterproof fabrics, often called a "technical wash." Products like Nikwax Tech Wash are great options. Always wash rainwear separately—mixing it with other laundry can transfer oils and dirt, making it less effective. Also, avoid overfilling the machine; a half-full load is ideal.

4. Turn Inside Out and Remove Insoles

For a thorough clean, turn your rain jackets and pants inside out before washing. If washing rain boots, remove the insoles and hand wash them separately with mild soap and water. Let them air dry completely before reinserting.

5. Wash with Care

Set your washing machine to a cold water, delicate, or gentle cycle. Harsh cycles or hot water can damage the waterproof coating, so always keep the settings light.

6. Skip the Fabric Softener

Fabric softeners can break down the waterproof layer of your rainwear, so avoid them entirely. Instead, stick to mild detergents made for technical fabrics.

7. Air Dry Only

After washing, hang your rainwear to dry in a well-ventilated space. Never tumble dry, as the heat can damage the waterproof membrane.

8. Store Properly

When not in use, store your rainwear in a cool, dry place on a hanger to maintain its shape and durability.
